Gatlinburg Winter Events

The annual Gatlinburg Winter Magic adds a special touch to an already beautiful part of the Smoky Mountains to experience the winter season. What started as a handful of Christmas light displays and events in 1989 has grown into well over one million dollars worth of environmentally-friendly LED light displayed throughout Gatlinburg, TN. Hundreds of thousands of visitors will flock to Gatlinburg during the 2019 Smoky Mountain Winterfest to see the lights and experience all that Winter Magic has to offer. Below, you can find details on when the 2019 Gatlinburg Winter Magic begins and some of the most popular events that take place throughout the season.

2019 Gatlinburg Winter Magic Chili Cookoff

The Smoky Mountain Winterfest in Gatlinburg typically begins with a Chili Cookoff on November 6, 2019 featuring the best Chili recipes from chefs from all over Gatlinburg. It takes place from 5:00pm-8:00pm in downtown Gatlinburg on the Parkway. Admission is free, but in order to taste the Chili, they usually have a wristband that must be purchased for $10 at https://www.gatlinburg.com/event/winter-magic-kickoff-chili-cookoff/ . The big difference this year is that the area lights will not be turned on on this night. They are postponing the light displays, which we discuss below.

Gatlinburg Christmas Lights

The Gatlinburg Christmas lights will be turned on November 22, 2019 and will remain on until February 17th. To get an idea of what the 2019 Gatlinburg Winter Magic is like, the city of Gatlinburg posted the video below featuring some of the Christmas light displays that can be seen.
